Condition affects price

Pre-owned watches trade across a wide condition spectrum. These ranges are typical for the secondary market.

Unpolished
Worn but the case has never been polished; original brushed and polished surfaces are intact.
+15–25% vs median
Polished
Case has been professionally or amateur polished at some point; edge definition is softened.

The Marine 5517 with manual-wind movement and 70-hour reserve is the most technically focused Marine reference; secondary prices are consistent and the hand-wind configuration is preferred by collectors who engage directly with their watches.

Editorial estimate, 2026 Q2. Actual prices vary by condition, date, and box/papers status.

In-house manufacture caliber · caliber 777Q (hand-wind, in-house, 70h reserve)
Medium-large: suits wrists 6.5 in+ (16.5 cm+)
40 mm case. Wears confidently on average to larger wrists. May overhang on slender builds.

Community + OSINT signals haven’t landed for this reference yet. We don’t publish a rating against zero signal: the number would mean nothing. Editorial body + caliber + market value still surface above; ratings appear once the signal corpus does.

Authentication

Rope-flank case texture is machined at manufacture; polishing destroys it and is irreversible.

Known issues in the market
  • Polished rope-texture flanks on serviced examples where a careless polisher smoothed the texture.
  • Guilloché dial swaps from other Marine variants.
AreaWhat to checkWhat is correctRed flag
caseRope-flank case textureSharp, well-defined rope ridges on all four case flanks; texture runs continuously without interruption at lug junctionSmooth or partially smooth flanks; soft ridge edges indicating polishing; inconsistent texture depth across flanks
dialMarine guilloché patternGuilloché specific to Marine 5517; wave-pattern engine turning consistent with nautical themeClassique-variant guilloché pattern; flat dial without engine turning; non-Marine pattern
crownHand-wind crown operationSmooth winding resistance consistent with Cal. 777Q; no automatic rotor slippageAuto-winding feel through the crown indicating a movement swap to an automatic caliber
Common legitimate replacements
  • Rope-flank case texture cannot be restored once polished; polished examples carry a permanent condition penalty.
  • Cal. 777Q is a hand-wind movement; service intervals are longer than automatic equivalents and should be documented.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Marine 5517 is the sports tier of the Marine family: a steel case with integrated rubber strap and a guilloché dial with a naval chart texture. The case finishing is the most distinctive authentication checkpoint on this reference -- the complex case geometry requires extensive hand finishing.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

Printed wave-pattern dial

  • No three-dimensional shimmer under raking light
  • Pattern appears identical from all viewing angles
MEDIUM

Over-polished case

  • Lug surfaces uniformly polished with no satin-finished planes
  • Crisp finish-boundary edges replaced by rounded transitions

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
Current productionBlue or silver guilloché dial with wave-pattern engine turning referencing naval charts. Large Arabic Breguet numerals at 12 and 6, applied indices at other hour positions.
  • Wave-pattern guilloché texture across the dial field, referencing nautical charts
  • Large Breguet Arabic numerals only at 12 and 6; applied baton indices at remaining hours
  • Date display at 6 o'clock, integrated into the dial design
  • Blued steel Breguet hands with lozenge tips
  • Screw-down crown at 3 o'clock, water resistance rated at 100m

Service part flags

Integrated rubber strap and buckle

Original: Rubber strap with complex integrated end-links that mate precisely to the case lugs. The transition from case to strap is seamless. Breguet's anchor logo appears on the buckle.

Replacement tells
  • Aftermarket strap with end-links that show a visible gap at the case junction
  • Buckle without the Breguet anchor motif or with a generic deployant clasp
  • Strap rubber that has hardened or cracked -- genuine Breguet Marine rubber deteriorates over time and replacement is expected, but the replacement strap must be a genuine Breguet part
Case

Original: Brushed and polished stainless steel case with complex faceted lugs. The lug surfaces alternate between satin-brushed and mirror-polished, and the transitions are crisp.

Replacement tells
  • Uniformly polished case with no satin-brushed surfaces (indicates over-polishing during service)
  • Lug transitions that show rounding rather than crisp edges at the finish boundary
  • Crown guard scratches that are not consistent with normal wear patterns
Guilloché dial

Original: Wave-pattern rose-engine guilloché. The pattern is three-dimensional and catches light differently depending on viewing angle.

Replacement tells
  • Flat or printed wave pattern without the three-dimensional shimmer of genuine engine turning
  • Pattern that is perfectly uniform under 5x magnification

Case back markings

toggle
All production
  • Exhibition caseback with "BREGUET" and serial number
  • Cal. 777Q or Cal. 517F depending on production year -- verify caliber matches the reference specification
  • Water resistance rating engraved on caseback
  • Case reference 5517 and material code on caseback or lug

Movement tells

toggle
  • Marine series movements are robust but the rubber strap is a consumable -- strap condition alone is not a quality indicator for the movement
  • Gasket replacement should accompany any service on a water-resistant case; ask for service records confirming pressure testing
