Authentication

The engraved caseback text must be deep and crisp; shallow engraving indicates an aftermarket or replacement caseback.

Known issues in the market
  • Shallow caseback engraving is the primary indicator of a non-genuine or replacement caseback on the Commander.
  • The ETA/Valjoux 7750 base is correct and genuine; sellers should not misrepresent it as an in-house movement.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Clifton Commander Chronograph uses a Valjoux 7750 base; the two-sub-register layout on the 44mm case and the tachymeter bezel are the visual and authentication anchors.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The Clifton Commander is a solid mid-range chronograph on a common base movement; not a significant reproduction target.

  • Sub-register hand alignment at zero position.
  • Tachymeter scale printing quality under 10x magnification.
  • B&M signed rotor visible through any display port.

Dial variants by era

Service part flags

toggle
Chronograph sub-registers

Original: Running seconds at 9, 30-minute register at 12; both hands should rest at zero and reset cleanly.

Replacement tells
  • A sub-register hand that doesn't return to 12 on reset indicates a worn or damaged reset lever.
  • Only one sub-register visible indicates a different movement or a damaged second sub-register.
Tachymeter chapter ring

Original: Printed tachymeter scale on the outer chapter ring; must be crisp and correctly graduated.

Replacement tells
  • Blurred tachymeter scale printing is a sign of a reproduction or a heavily cleaned dial.

Case back markings

toggle
2015 to present
  • BAUME & MERCIER CLIFTON COMMANDER CHRONOGRAPH
  • ETA/Valjoux 7750 or similar caliber designation
  • SWISS MADE
  • Solid caseback standard
  • 50M WATER RESISTANT

Movement tells

toggle
  • The Valjoux 7750 is an automatic cam-and-lever chronograph; the seconds sub-register at 9 o'clock distinguishes it from the column-wheel 7753.
  • A column-wheel visible through a display caseback (if present) indicates a different caliber was installed.
  • The 7750 architecture has the date mechanism on the dial side; the date display at 4:30 is characteristic.
  • B&M rotor signature should appear on the oscillating weight.
