Authentication

Submarine steel cannot be mirror-polished; any U1 with a polished case has been incorrectly serviced.

Known issues in the market
  • Submarine steel has a specific matte texture that cannot be polished to a mirror finish.
  • Sellita SW200-1 is the correct movement; verify through caseback.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The U1 uses submarine steel from German Navy U-boat hulls, giving it a genuinely distinctive material character. The thick-walled case, the submarine steel caseback engraving, and the 1000M water resistance specification are the three things that define the authentic U1.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The U1 has low replica exposure due to its niche collector market. The primary risk is standard steel U-series watches sold as the submarine steel U1.

  • Missing "U-BOOT STAHL" or "SUBMARINE STEEL" caseback engraving
  • Case that is clearly magnetic -- submarine steel should be non-magnetic
  • Case finish that matches standard brushed steel rather than the matte black submarine steel character

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2005 to presentMatte black dial with large luminous Arabic numerals, broad luminous hands, unidirectional rotating bezel with AR-coated sapphire glass. The watch is visually imposing: thick case, wide lugs, large crown.
  • "U1" on the dial in white text
  • Large luminous Arabic numerals with broad luminous plots at all hour positions
  • Unidirectional rotating bezel with 60-minute scale and luminous marker at 12
  • "1000M / 3280FT" water resistance text on the dial
  • Matte black dial with no glossy surfaces
  • The case profile is notably thick-walled compared to standard dive watches of the same diameter

Service part flags

toggle
Submarine steel case

Original: The case material is steel used in German Navy submarine construction. Sinn has proprietary documentation of this material. The steel has no magnetic influence (submarine hulls are built to be non-magnetic for compass accuracy). The case finish is a distinctive matte black that differs from standard brushed steel.

Replacement tells
  • Case that is strongly magnetic -- submarine steel used in the U1 should show minimal to no magnetic influence; test with a strong magnet against the case flank
  • "U-BOOT STAHL" or "SUBMARINE STEEL" text missing from the caseback on a stated genuine U1
  • Case finish that looks like standard brushed stainless rather than the distinctive matte black character of submarine steel
  • Case walls that feel thin or do not match the substantial hand-feel of the U1 specification
Unidirectional bezel

Original: The bezel rotates counterclockwise only with positive click stops. The bezel insert carries a 60-minute scale with a luminous marker. The bezel should have firm detents without any bidirectional movement.

Replacement tells
  • Bezel that rotates in both directions -- the U1 bezel is strictly unidirectional
  • Bezel insert with printed rather than engraved and filled scale markings
  • Luminous marker at 12 that is inconsistent with the rest of the dial lume
Crown and crown guards

Original: The crown on the U1 is a large screw-down crown with integrated crown guards as part of the case architecture. The guards are machined from the case, not welded-on additions. The crown screws down to 1000M depth rating.

Replacement tells
  • Crown guards that are separate welded pieces rather than integrated case geometry
  • Crown that does not screw down fully -- 1000M depth rating requires positive crown seating
  • Crown diameter inconsistent with the large-format U1 crown specification

Case back markings

toggle
2005 to present
  • "U-BOOT STAHL" (submarine steel) or "SUBMARINE STEEL" engraved on the caseback -- this is the material confirmation
  • "SINN SPEZIALUHREN" and "GERMANY"
  • "1000M" water resistance rating
  • "AR-DEHUMIDIFICATION" and/or argon gas fill notation
  • Reference "U1" and serial number
  • The caseback should be noticeably solid and heavy -- the U1 case construction is substantial

Movement tells

toggle
  • SW200-1 (Sellita, ETA 2824-2 equivalent) beats at 28,800bph with a 38-hour power reserve. A fully wound U1 that stops before 32 hours warrants inspection.
  • Argon gas filling means the interior atmosphere is controlled. If the caseback is opened by an unauthorized shop that does not re-fill with argon, the dehumidification protection is lost until the next authorized service.
  • The dehumidifying capsule inside the case should be present and orange-brown in color. A fully saturated (dark) capsule needs replacement.
  • At 1000M water resistance, the case gaskets are critical. Any crown damage or caseback gasket failure compromises the depth rating. Inspect the crown tube for wear.
