The antimagnetic Air-King's defining feature is its aviation-tribute dial with mixed Arabic numeral markers; fakes consistently get the numeral placement and font wrong.

Known issues in the market
  • Arabic numerals at wrong positions; genuine 116900 has numerals at 5, 10, 20, 25, 35, 40, 50, 55 only, not at 12, 3, 6, 9.
  • Yellow second hand replaced with standard red or orange second hand from other Rolex references.
  • Incorrect "AIR-KING" text sizing; genuine dial has oversized "AIR-KING" with small "OYSTER PERPETUAL" below.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Second hands are frequently swapped; yellow second hand is specific to the Air-King and not found on other modern Rolex references.
  • Dials are the most valuable component to verify; any dial without correct Arabic numeral placement is a replacement or fake.
  • Bracelets are replaced on tool watches; verify Oyster bracelet with correct reference stamps inside the clasp.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The 116900 Air-King revived in 2016 has a deliberately unconventional dial with mixed numeral sizes and an Oyster bracelet. Cal. 3131 (with Parachrom hairspring) powers it. The busy dial is distinctive enough that reproductions stand out quickly once you know what to look for.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

Replica Air-Kings with incorrect dial text layout

  • Green text on replica dials is often the wrong shade and lacks the crisp letterpress quality of the genuine piece
  • Yellow minute markers are frequently too thick or too short
  • The precise sizing relationship between the 3, 6, and 9 Arabic numerals and the baton indexes at other positions is often wrong on reproductions
MEDIUM

Wrong generation dial in 116900 case

  • Pre-2016 Air-King dials lacked the green color scheme and mixed numeral design; a vintage-style dial in a 116900 case is a parts combination
  • Any dial with a date window is incorrect for the 116900

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2016 to 2022 (116900)Black dial with large 3, 6, and 9 Arabic numerals in combination with applied baton indexes at other positions. Minute track with large yellow-painted five-minute markers.
  • Large white Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9 with yellow five-minute minute marks
  • "ROLEX" in green at 12 o'clock, "AIR-KING" below in green
  • "OYSTER PERPETUAL" and "SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER / OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED" in smaller white text
  • Oyster Crown at 6 o'clock position (crown guard area)

Service part flags

toggle
Dial

Original: The multi-color dial text is a defining feature: green brand text, white Arabic numerals, yellow minute markers. All text is applied with precise registration.

Replacement tells
  • Minute track numerals that bleed into surrounding text or appear uneven
  • Green text that appears too bright or too dark relative to reference images
  • Arabic numeral sizing that is proportionally off compared to genuine production dials
  • Any dial without the combination Arabic/baton/yellow-minute-marker layout
Bezel

Original: Smooth steel bezel with no markings. The 116900 bezel has a specific profile that differs from the Submariner and Explorer families.

Replacement tells
  • Bezel with any markings or scale -- the Air-King bezel is entirely plain
  • Bezel profile that looks interchanged from another Oyster-family reference

Case back markings

toggle
2016 to 2022
  • Solid caseback -- no exhibition window
  • Engraved: ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL AIR-KING
  • Rolex crown engraved at center
  • Reference and serial between lugs; caseback is plain aside from the central Rolex markings

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 3131 is the correct movement; it shares architecture with Cal. 3130 but adds a Parachrom (blue) hairspring for magnetic resistance. If a service receipt documents a different caliber, the movement is not original.
  • The Parachrom hairspring is blue and should be visible on inspection; a conventional (silver/gold) alloy spring indicates a non-factory movement.
  • Beat rate is 28,800 bph; deviations suggest the movement has been altered or swapped.
