The oversized crown is the most frequently damaged and replaced component; verify it is the original large Oris-signed crown and not a standard replacement.
Known issues in the market
- Standard replacement crown substituted for the original oversized crown; any crown smaller than approximately 8mm diameter is not the correct ProPilot crown.
- Cal. 751 pointer-date function; the pointer date should advance smoothly and not require correction after winding.
- Anti-reflective coating on the crystal; the ProPilot uses ARSA glass with double-side AR coating and coating damage is common on used examples.
| Area | What to check | What is correct | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| crown | Oversized crown size and Oris signing | Crown is visibly larger than standard tool-watch crowns; Oris logo engraved or embossed on crown face; crown pulls out and screws down correctly | Crown the same size as standard Rolex or Omega crowns; missing Oris signing; crown that is clearly a replacement of incorrect size |
| movement | Cal. 751 pointer-type day display | Cal. 751 based on Sellita SW220-1; pointer-type day display via sub-disc at 12 o'clock; date at 3 o'clock; Oris-signed rotor | Standard date window at 6 o'clock instead of pointer day display; non-Oris-signed rotor; movement architecture inconsistent with SW220-1 |
| crystal | Anti-reflective coated glass | ARSA hardened glass with double-side anti-reflective coating; minimal reflections under direct light; crystal is flat profile | Strong reflections indicating degraded or missing AR coating; crystal with dome profile (from another reference); cracked coating visible as circular patterns |
| dial | Aviation dial layout and text | "BIG CROWN PROPILOT" text on dial; Arabic numerals; clean legible layout; SuperLuminova indices and hands for night reading | Incorrect dial text; missing SuperLuminova fill; dial layout inconsistent with ProPilot specification |
| caseback | Caseback with aviation text | Caseback engraved with ProPilot reference text; Oris logo; correct water resistance rating; screw-down caseback | Missing ProPilot text; incorrect water resistance rating; press-fit caseback on a reference that should have screw-down |
Common legitimate replacements
- Oversized crown is the most commonly damaged and replaced component; Oris-signed ProPilot crown is required for correct function and value.
- Crystal AR coating degrades and crystals are replaced; verify replacement maintains correct profile and AR coating.
- Leather or canvas straps are replaced frequently; original Oris strap is preferred but not required for value.
Expert resources: WatchUSeek Oris forum ProPilot thread. Crown size comparison: ProPilot crown is visibly outsized compared to standard watches; side-by-side comparison with reference images confirms. Oris customer service can verify serial and configuration including original crown specification.
