The oversized crown is the most frequently damaged and replaced component; verify it is the original large Oris-signed crown and not a standard replacement.

Known issues in the market
  • Standard replacement crown substituted for the original oversized crown; any crown smaller than approximately 8mm diameter is not the correct ProPilot crown.
  • Cal. 751 pointer-date function; the pointer date should advance smoothly and not require correction after winding.
  • Anti-reflective coating on the crystal; the ProPilot uses ARSA glass with double-side AR coating and coating damage is common on used examples.
AreaWhat to checkWhat is correctRed flag
crownOversized crown size and Oris signingCrown is visibly larger than standard tool-watch crowns; Oris logo engraved or embossed on crown face; crown pulls out and screws down correctlyCrown the same size as standard Rolex or Omega crowns; missing Oris signing; crown that is clearly a replacement of incorrect size

crystalAnti-reflective coated glassARSA hardened glass with double-side anti-reflective coating; minimal reflections under direct light; crystal is flat profileStrong reflections indicating degraded or missing AR coating; crystal with dome profile (from another reference); cracked coating visible as circular patterns
dialAviation dial layout and text"BIG CROWN PROPILOT" text on dial; Arabic numerals; clean legible layout; SuperLuminova indices and hands for night readingIncorrect dial text; missing SuperLuminova fill; dial layout inconsistent with ProPilot specification
casebackCaseback with aviation textCaseback engraved with ProPilot reference text; Oris logo; correct water resistance rating; screw-down casebackMissing ProPilot text; incorrect water resistance rating; press-fit caseback on a reference that should have screw-down
Common legitimate replacements
  • Oversized crown is the most commonly damaged and replaced component; Oris-signed ProPilot crown is required for correct function and value.
  • Crystal AR coating degrades and crystals are replaced; verify replacement maintains correct profile and AR coating.
  • Leather or canvas straps are replaced frequently; original Oris strap is preferred but not required for value.
Expert resources: WatchUSeek Oris forum ProPilot thread. Crown size comparison: ProPilot crown is visibly outsized compared to standard watches; side-by-side comparison with reference images confirms. Oris customer service can verify serial and configuration including original crown specification.

Oris Big Crown ProPilot Date (ref. 01 751 7761 4065-07 5 20 22FC), Cal. 751 on a Sellita SW220-1 base. Pilot watch with pointer-type day display and oversized onion crown.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The ProPilot Date sees fewer reproductions than dress or dive references. The oversized crown is difficult to replicate convincingly.

  • Reproduction crowns are often standard-size rather than oversized onion profile
  • Numeral font on reproductions is frequently narrower than original
  • Caseback engravings lack crisp definition at standard depth

Dial variants by era

Service part flags

Crown

Original: Large signed "onion" crown, the defining visual element of the ProPilot series. Oversized for gloved aviation use.

Replacement tells
  • Standard-size crown in place of the oversized onion crown
  • Unsigned crown or crown with incorrect font
  • Crown that does not provide same tactile feedback when setting (ProPilot crown has firm detents)
Dial

Original: Matte black with high-contrast printed Arabic numerals. Luminous plots on hands and applied markers.

Replacement tells
  • Glossy dial surface when original is matte
  • Numerals with different font weight or condensed style
  • Lume plots that do not align with marker centers

Case back markings

toggle
2014 to present
  • "ORIS" across center
  • "BIG CROWN PROPILOT" around perimeter
  • Reference number and serial
  • "SWISS MADE" at base
  • Solid caseback, six-screw attachment

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 751 is a Sellita SW220-1 base with Oris modifications for the day-date display. The caseback is solid; no movement visibility without opening.
  • Beat rate 28,800 bph. The day wheel advances by pointer, not a window. A movement with a standard date window only indicates a different base movement.
  • Power reserve 38 hours. Oris-signed rotor visible if caseback is opened for service.
