Authentication

The crown must sit perfectly flush with the rectangular case side; any gap around the crown indicates gasket or crown replacement issues.

Known issues in the market
  • The rectangular case has tight tolerances and any gap around the crown indicates a gasket or crown replacement issue.
  • The Gouverneur is Piaget's tank-style dress watch; the rectangular case shape is entirely Piaget-specific for this model.

Common legitimate replacements

  • Crown replacement is a service indicator; original Piaget crowns have specific knurling and a Piaget logo on the crown face.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Gouverneur carries caliber 500P, a manual-wind in-house movement in a square cushion case -- one of the few major Swiss houses producing consistent square-case dress output. The square case shape, manual wind, and Piaget movement finishing are the three authentication pillars.

Known reproduction risks

HIGH RISK

Automatic movement in manual-wind Gouverneur case

  • Rotor visible through sapphire caseback
  • Watch winds from wrist motion
  • Caseback caliber number inconsistent with 500P
MEDIUM

Case shape error

  • Tonneau or rectangular case rather than square cushion
  • Corner radius inconsistent with genuine Gouverneur profile
  • Lug geometry differs from the integrated Gouverneur lug design
MEDIUM

Undecorated movement bridges

  • Plain or brushed bridge surfaces without Cotes de Geneve
  • No anglage on bridge edges
  • Movement appears industrially finished

Case shape

Original: Square cushion: four sides with gently convex curvature, creating a rounded-square profile. This is not a tonneau (barrel-shaped) and not a pure rectangle. The corners of the square are rounded with a specific radius. The case is 38mm measured at the widest point.

Replacement tells
  • Tonneau (barrel) shape rather than square cushion
  • Rectangle case with sharp corners
  • Case width inconsistent with 38mm
  • Lug attachment geometry different from the Gouverneur integrated lug design
Movement through caseback

Original: Caliber 500P is manual-wind. No automatic rotor. The movement is visible through the sapphire display caseback. Piaget finishing: Cotes de Geneve and anglage on all bridges. The rotor is absent. The manual mainspring will be visible as the primary energy source.

Replacement tells
  • Automatic rotor present through caseback -- caliber 500P is manual only
  • Undecorated bridges
  • Bridge layout inconsistent with the Piaget 500P architecture

Case back markings

toggle
2013 to 2019
  • Caliber 500P designation
  • "PIAGET" with logo
  • Water resistance: 30m
  • Reference G0A38010 with serial number
  • Case material designation (steel, white gold, or rose gold depending on variant)
  • "SWISS MADE"

Movement tells

toggle
  • Caliber 500P has a 43-hour power reserve. Manual-wind only. A watch stopping in under 24 hours from full wind has a worn mainspring or different movement.
  • Manual winding: crown winds directly, no rotor. The winding feel is direct and progressive, building mainspring tension from the first crown rotation.
  • Production of the Gouverneur ended in 2019. Any "new" Gouverneur offered at standard retail is old stock. Grey-market examples are in the 2013-2019 production window -- verify serial number ranges if provenance is claimed.
