Authentication

The sun-moon indicator must show the sun during AM hours and the moon during PM hours; any incorrect reading indicates mechanism service is needed.

Known issues in the market
  • The sun-moon mechanism is the most delicate part of this movement; sticking or incorrect advance requires service.
  • The day display must also advance correctly; verify both indications against the current day and time.

Last reviewed June 2026

The Classic Sun and Moon features a fully mechanical AM/PM indicator using a bi-color rotating disc, which shows a sun or moon hemisphere depending on the time of day. The complication is in-house and implemented without electronics, which is the whole point.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

Reproductions of this model are uncommon. The complication makes copying difficult.

  • The sun/moon disc should move smoothly and predictably; a stuck or erratic disc is a service issue, not a reproduction flag

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2015 to presentDress watch with sun/moon disc indicator at 12 o'clock; multiple dial color options.
  • Sun/moon aperture at 12: gold sun face visible during AM, crescent moon visible during PM
  • "SUN & MOON" text on dial
  • In-house Orient caliber (EM7F or equivalent)
  • No date window (the sun/moon disc occupies the 12 o'clock area)
  • Dress case proportions; typically 40-42mm

Service part flags

Sun/Moon Disc

Original: Bi-color rotating disc with sun and moon graphics; changes at 12-hour intervals.

Replacement tells
  • A disc that does not advance (remains on one side for more than 12 hours) indicates a damaged or stuck mechanism
  • Incorrect graphics on the disc (non-Orient prints or poorly reproduced imagery)

Case back markings

toggle
2015 to present
  • "ORIENT WATCH CO., LTD."
  • Caliber designation (EM7F or similar)
  • "JAPAN"
  • Serial number
  • "WATER RESISTANT" with ATM rating

Movement tells

toggle
  • The sun/moon complication adds a cam and disc mechanism to the standard gear train; a watchmaker unfamiliar with Orient complication calibers should not attempt service.
  • Disc advancement check: set the time to 11:55 AM and verify the disc flips to the moon side by 12:00 PM.
  • The movement should hack (stop-seconds) cleanly for setting the time to the correct AM/PM position.
