Lug tip wear is the primary condition concern on used 42mm Khaki Field Mechanical examples; inspect under good light.
Known issues in the market
- The larger 42mm case accumulates lug tip wear faster than the 38mm variant; inspect lug edges for rounding or metal removal.
- Cal. H-50 is identical to the 38mm variant; all movement checks apply equally.
- Standard spring-bar strap attachment means straps are frequently swapped; non-original straps are common.
| Area | What to check | What is correct | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| case | Lug tip condition | Lug edges retain original sharpness or show minimal rounding consistent with normal wear | Heavily rounded lug tips or visible metal removal indicating aggressive polishing or heavy use |
| caseback | Cal. H-50 movement identity | Movement signed H-50 and Hamilton through the exhibition caseback | Unsigned ETA 2801-2 movement without Hamilton decoration indicating a movement swap |
| dial | Field watch dial and lume consistency | Uniform lume on all indices and hands; Arabic numerals at quarters with correct proportions | Mismatched lume aging between hands and dial indices indicating hand or index replacement |
Common legitimate replacements
- Cal. H-50 service is inexpensive; the 42mm case size makes for easy access during service.
- Spring bars are the most commonly replaced component; non-original straps are not an authenticity concern at this price point.
