Authentication

White dial and Spring Drive GMT distinguish the SBGJ223; same authentication principles as SBGJ201

Known issues in the market
  • White dial variants are targets for dial-swap fraud using non-GMT or non-Spring Drive movements
  • Spring Drive seconds glide is the fastest authentication in person
AreaWhat to checkWhat is correctRed flag
dialWhite dial with GMT designationClean white dial; "Spring Drive" and "GMT" both signed; GMT hand tip color distinct from hour and minute hands; date at 3; luminous plots with correct Grand Seiko applicationMissing either "Spring Drive" or "GMT"; dial color inconsistent with documented white variants; incorrect luminous plot shape
movementSpring Drive 9R86 authenticationIdentical to SBGJ201: glide motion, tri-synchro regulator, Grand Seiko signed rotorAny stepping or ticking; wrong calibre; incorrect caseback engraving
caseCase and bezel condition44GS case lines maintained; bezel insert free of chips; alternating surface finishes sharpPolished case transitions; chipped or replaced bezel insert; case proportions inconsistent with 44GS
Common legitimate replacements
  • Same as SBGJ201: bracelet clasp and GMT hand tip are common wear items.
  • White dials are sensitive to UV; inspect for yellowing near indices.
Expert resources: Grand Seiko boutique serial verification recommended on any SBGJ-series purchase. Calibre 9R86 is factory-service only.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The SBGJ223 shares Cal. 9S86 with the SBGJ201 but uses a blue textured dial introduced in 2019. The blue dial has a physical grain that changes character at different light angles. Authentication protocol is identical to the SBGJ201 with the addition of dial texture verification.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

SBGJ201 silver dial in SBGJ223 case, or vice versa

  • Dial color that does not match the reference number on the caseback
  • Flat blue dial without the characteristic three-dimensional grain texture

SBGJ201 and SBGJ223 are closely related references sharing Cal. 9S86. The primary risk is a dial swap between the two, not a movement swap.

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2019 to presentBlue dial with a physical grain structure evoking the Shinshu highlands. The texture is applied to the dial substrate and produces three-dimensional depth.
  • Blue dial with physical grain texture visible under raking light
  • Applied GS indices with zaratsu mirror faces identical to the SBGJ201
  • 24-hour outer ring and GMT hand in orange or red
  • "HI-BEAT 36000 GMT" text printed on the dial
  • The texture creates natural variation in the blue color across the dial surface

Service part flags

Blue textured dial

Original: The dial texture is applied during manufacturing and is not a printed pattern. The grain has physical depth that responds to raking light with three-dimensional character.

Replacement tells
  • Blue dial that appears flat and uniform under raking light -- genuine texture has a three-dimensional grain
  • Any repeating pattern in the texture -- machine stamping produces regular repeats, genuine grain is irregular
  • SBGJ201 silver dial fitted to SBGJ223 case -- the reference number on caseback will not match

Case back markings

toggle
2019 to present
  • SBGJ223 reference number
  • CAL. 9S86 and HI-BEAT 36000 GMT designations
  • 10 BAR water resistance
  • Serial number in Seiko format
  • Grand Seiko lion medallion

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 9S86 service tells are identical to the SBGJ201. The 36,000 bph stepping, 55-hour power reserve, and double-impulse escapement apply equally.
