Authentication

The RM 055 titanium movement baseplate must be pore-free under a loupe; any machining marks indicate a non-genuine movement.

Known issues in the market
  • Richard Mille movement finishing is among the finest in production; any visible machining marks under a loupe are a serious authentication red flag.
  • NTPT Carbon cases have a distinctive layered pattern visible in raking light; uniform carbon without layering may be non-genuine.

The RM 055 Bubba Watson uses white NTPT carbon with green accents. NTPT carbon has a distinctive layered fiber pattern visible under raking light. Any watch presenting a uniform matte-black case as an RM 055 is not genuine.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

Steel or resin case with matte-white or grey coating presented as NTPT carbon.

  • Uniform surface with no fiber layer variation under raking light
  • Magnetic response (steel base)
  • Weight substantially higher than the genuine approximately 33g

NTPT carbon is a proprietary material manufactured by North Thin Ply Technology in Switzerland. Reproducing the visual character of NTPT accurately is currently beyond the capability of the replica market.

HIGH RISK

Automatic movement with rotor presented as the manual-wind RM 055.

  • Rotor visible through caseback: disqualifying

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2011 to presentSkeleton dial showing the RMAS7 manual-wind movement; small seconds at 9; no chronograph; green accent color on crown indicator, inscription elements, and lining.
  • White NTPT carbon case has visible fiber-layer pattern under direct light; the pattern is not uniform and varies subtly across the case surface
  • Green accent color is specific to the Bubba Watson edition; absence of green or substitution with another color is a deviation
  • "BUBBA WATSON" or equivalent inscription on movement bridge visible through skeleton dial

Service part flags

toggle
NTPT carbon case

Original: North Thin Ply Technology carbon; white-toned composite with a layered fiber weave visible as a subtle gradient pattern; lighter than titanium; non-magnetic; not paintable.

Replacement tells
  • Uniform matte-black or grey surface with no visible fiber layer pattern
  • Surface feel is smooth-painted rather than the slightly textured composite of NTPT
  • Case responds to a magnet (steel substrate beneath coating)
  • Case weight substantially heavier than the stated approximately 33g for the RM 055
Manual-wind crown

Original: Crown at 9 o'clock (RM convention); rubber-coated; no screw-down; winds smoothly with no slipping.

Replacement tells
  • Crown position at 3 o'clock (standard Swiss convention): inconsistent with RM case architecture
  • Screw-down crown: not used on the manual-wind RM 055

Case back markings

toggle
2011 to present
  • Sapphire caseback showing RMAS7 movement
  • No rotor (manual-wind)
  • NTPT carbon caseback matching the case material
  • Reference "RM 055" and serial engraved on inner titanium ring

Movement tells

toggle
  • The RMAS7 is manual-wind; no rotor should be visible through the caseback.
  • RMAS7 spline screws throughout: same signature hardware as all RM movements; any non-spline fastener is a deviation.
  • Full wind delivers 55 hours of power reserve; a movement reaching full reserve in under 25 turns from empty is not delivering the stated reserve.
  • Under raking light from different angles, the NTPT carbon case shows a different surface pattern at each angle due to the fiber layering; a painted or coated surface shows a uniform appearance regardless of light angle.
