Richard Mille's collaboration with Rafael Nadal began in 2010 and deepened with each successive generation of the RM 27 series, culminating in the 27-03 at Baselworld 2017. The brief was not theoretical: Nadal trained and competed in the watch, and the movement's suspension system had to tolerate shock loads that would destroy a conventional tourbillon bridge. The NTPT carbon case is formed from hundreds of layers of carbon fiber prepreg laminated at alternating angles, producing the distinctive marbled surface pattern that varies across every case.
The quartz TPT crown serves both aesthetic and structural purposes, matched to the carbon language of the case. Fifty numbered pieces were produced, with retail pricing in the range of $900,000 at launch, making it one of the most expensive watches in the RM lineup at the time.
Verify the serial number against Richard Mille's archive service before any purchase, as the RM 27-03 is among the most counterfeited references in the brand's catalog. Insist on the full set: box, papers, certificate of authenticity, and the numbered warranty card, since the 50-piece production means provenance documentation matters more than usual. NTPT carbon is extremely durable but inspect the case edges carefully under magnification for micro-fractures, particularly around the crown and lugs where tournament wear could have introduced stress.
The manual tourbillon movement requires service every three to five years, and only Richard Mille authorized centers have the proprietary tooling for the suspension system.
