The 36,000bph hi-beat sweep is the quickest functional test; standard 28,800bph movement is a swap.

Known issues in the market
  • A standard 28,800bph movement will show more visible stepping in the seconds hand than the hi-beat Cal. 0950.
  • Integrated bracelet clasp must be Citizen-signed.

Last reviewed June 2026

The Series 8 880 Mechanical is the hi-beat variant of the Series 8 line, running Cal. 0950 at 36,000bph. This is one of the few hi-beat movements available outside of Seiko/Grand Seiko and Swiss luxury brands at its price tier. The integrated bracelet design places this alongside the Series 8 870 but at a step above in movement specification.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

Very low replica risk. The hi-beat specification and integrated bracelet make this an unattractive copy target at its price.

  • Movement beating at 28,800bph instead of 36,000bph
  • Removable bracelet instead of integrated
  • "Cal. 9051" on caseback instead of "Cal. 0950"

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2021 to presentBlue or silver dial with applied markers. "CITIZEN" at 12. "SERIES 8" text. "880" designation on dial or caseback. Date at 3. Integrated bracelet with no visible lug gap.
  • "SERIES 8" and "880" designation confirm the hi-beat variant
  • Integrated bracelet with no external lug attachment; the bracelet flows directly from the case
  • Case 40mm, slightly smaller than the 870 at 40.8mm
  • Cal. 0950 visible on caseback; the "0950" caliber number distinguishes it from the 9051

Service part flags

toggle
Movement

Original: Citizen Cal. 0950 hi-beat automatic, 36,000bph, 50h power reserve. The hi-beat movement produces a noticeably faster tick sound than a 28,800bph movement.

Replacement tells
  • A movement ticking at 28,800bph in a watch sold as the 880 hi-beat variant is not the correct caliber
  • The caseback should read Cal. 0950, not Cal. 9051
Bracelet

Original: Integrated bracelet specific to the 880. The 870 bracelet is not integrated and will not fit the 880 case correctly.

Replacement tells
  • A removable bracelet attached with spring bars is not the integrated 880 bracelet

Case back markings

toggle
2021 to present
  • Exhibition caseback with Cal. 0950 visible
  • "CITIZEN" on rotor
  • "SERIES 8" and "880" on caseback
  • Reference NA1004-87E and serial
  • "JAPAN MADE"

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 0950 at 36,000bph produces 10 ticks per second at the balance wheel. The sweep second hand motion is noticeably smoother than a 28,800bph movement and approaches a near-continuous sweep.
  • Power reserve is 50 hours, same as the 870. Verify: a hi-beat movement is more sensitive to insufficient lubrication; a watch that loses more than 10 seconds per day may need service earlier than a standard beat movement.
