Authentication

Skull dial is molded relief, not flat printed; depth and shadow under side lighting confirm genuine dial. All four corner screws must be present.

Known issues in the market
  • Printed flat skull dial (no relief) is a counterfeit or non-genuine dial; genuine skull dial has three-dimensional molded depth.
  • Missing corner screws are a common resale issue on skull editions.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The BR 03-92 Skull uses a skeletonized skull-motif dial on the ceramic-cased BR03 square body; the skull artwork quality under magnification is the primary authentication check.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

The Skull is one of the most visually distinctive Bell & Ross references and attracts reproductions; skull artwork quality and ceramic case material are the fastest checks.

  • Skull artwork under 10x magnification: original has clean edges, layered depth, and fine detail in the teeth and cheekbone rendering.
  • The ceramic case surface should show a consistent matte texture; a coated steel case has a different light reflection character.
  • Eye socket cutouts should align with the balance wheel axis; misalignment suggests the dial is not matched to this movement.
  • Corner bolts should sit flush in the ceramic; protruding bolts indicate fit issues common in replicas.

Skull dial

Original: Precision-machined and painted skull relief; the skull artwork is part of a structured dial plate, not simply a printed image.

Replacement tells
  • Flat printed skull image without three-dimensional relief; originals have sculptural depth.
  • Eye socket cutouts that don't align with the balance wheel visible from the front.
Ceramic case

Original: Matte black ceramic case and bezel; ceramic does not scratch under steel; corner bolts recessed into the ceramic.

Replacement tells
  • Scratches from a steel key or coin indicate the case material is not ceramic.
  • Steel case replacing the ceramic original; color may appear similar but the surface hardness is different.

Movement tells

toggle
  • Same BR-CAL.302 (ETA 2892-A2 base) as the standard BR03-92; the case is where this reference is unique.
  • The ceramic case requires specialist handling for any repair; scratched or chipped ceramic casework indicates rough handling or a fall.
  • B&R signed rotor through any exhibition port.
