Before anything else

Solid 18ct yellow gold with a green dial, and the only gold Black Bay in this catalog. The gold and the anodised aluminium bezel are an unusual pairing and both are worth checking.

What to look at

1. case Solid gold weight and hallmarks
   Correct Heavy for 39mm, hallmarked for 18ct
   Red flag Light for its size, or wear showing a different metal beneath
2. case Anodised aluminium disc
   Correct Matt green with gilded markings; marks and scratches as aluminium does
   Red flag A glossy ceramic-like surface, which this reference does not use
3. caseback Open caseback and caliber
   Correct Sapphire caseback showing the MT5400 with its bidirectional rotor
   Red flag A solid caseback, or a movement that is not an MT5400
4. movement COSC performance and reserve
   Correct Roughly 70 hours from full wind, chronometer-grade rate
   Red flag A reserve well short of 70 hours

Known issues on this reference

• The case is solid 18ct gold, not plated or gold-capped steel. Weight and hallmarking settle it quickly.
• The bezel disc is matt green ANODISED ALUMINIUM with gilded markings, not ceramic. It scratches the way aluminium does, and a ceramic-looking insert on this reference is wrong.
• The caseback is open with a sapphire crystal, unlike most Black Bay references, so the MT5400 should be visible and should be an MT5400.

Parts that are commonly replaced

• Straps and bracelets are swapped routinely on a 20mm lug width; confirm the gold bracelet is original where fitted.
• Bezel discs are replaced after damage.

Ask the seller, whatever the watch

• When was it last serviced, by whom, and is there paperwork?
• Has the case ever been polished?
• Which parts are not original to it?
• Do you have the box, papers and the original bracelet or strap?
• Why are you selling it?
• Can I see it in daylight, and can I take a photo of the caseback?
