Montblanc
Brand history
Founded 1906 in Hamburg, Germany as a pen manufacturer (Simplo Filler Pen Co., renamed Montblanc in 1910). The Richemont Group acquired Montblanc in 1993 and in 2006 purchased the historic Minerva manufacture in Villeret (Bernese Jura), giving the brand a genuine Swiss lever-escapement manufacture with roots to 1858. The Villeret facility produces in-house column-wheel chronograph calibers and pocket-watch complications for the high-end Heritage and 1858 Monopusher lines. The broader Montblanc watch range uses MB-coded ETA/Sellita movements.
Founded 1906 in Hamburg as Simplo Filler Pen Company; the "Montblanc" brand name was adopted 1909, referencing the highest Alpine peak. Montblanc is primarily a luxury stationery brand, the Meisterstück fountain pen has been in production since 1924. The watch division was established in 1997 and has been legitimized by the 2007 acquisition of Minerva, the historic Villeret manufacture known for high-precision chronograph calibers used in Swiss military pocket watches from the 1920s through the 1970s. The Minerva 16.29 caliber (based on the historic Minerva movement) is used in the 1858 Geosphere and the Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec references. The 1858 Automatic collection uses ETA or Sellita bases with less modification. The honest framing: Montblanc is a luxury-stationery brand first and a watchmaker second, but the Minerva acquisition gave it genuine movement credibility at the CHF 5,000–15,000 tier, the 1858 references with Minerva-derived calibers are well-regarded by movement collectors.
