The Ebel 1911 | family history
Named for the brand's founding year, the 1911 was Ebel's prestige round watch from 1986 through the brand's commercial peak in the 1990s. At its height, Ebel was advertising in the same publications as Rolex and positioning the 1911 as an answer to the Datejust at a lower price point. The current 1911 Automatic 40 maintains that lineage with honest Swiss construction.
Ebel's heritage flagship named for the year founder Eugene Blum opened his workshop. The 1911 Automatic 40mm features the coin-edge case bezel that made the brand famous and remains Ebel's purest expression of its Swiss identity.
1986 · Launch and the 1990s commercial peak
The 1911 launched with wide lugs, a clean round case, and careful satin/polish contrasts on the case and bracelet. In the late 1980s and 1990s, Ebel ran advertising campaigns positioning the watch against Rolex's Datejust. The Architects of Time campaign was effective and the 1911 became widely sold in North America. These vintage 1911 references are undervalued against their quality and history.

2000s-present · 1911 Automatic 40
After Movado Group's acquisition in 2004, the 1911 was refined rather than reinvented. The current 1911 Automatic 40 carries the ETA 2824-2 at 28,800 bph with 38-hour power reserve. The case proportions and distinctive wide lug design are retained. The watch represents solid value at current pre-owned prices, well below what comparable Swiss dress automatics from other brands command.
How to read this family
What to consider before buying an Ebel 1911.
- Is this still a watch worth buying, given Ebel's current market position? The 1911 is built to the standards that made Ebel a credible player in the 1990s, and those standards hold. The brand's diminished current visibility is actually an argument for buying pre-owned: the market underprices the quality. For personal wear at a good price, the 1911 Automatic is a strong choice.
- How does the original 1986 vintage compare to current production? The vintage references, especially the gold and two-tone examples from the late 1980s and early 1990s, have a presence that the current steel references do not fully replicate. If the vintage aesthetic is what draws you, seek a well-maintained original rather than the current production piece.
