Brand history

Founded in Tokyo in 1918 as the Shokosha Watch Research Institute; the Citizen name dates from 1924. Headquartered in Tokorozawa, Saitama, since 1930. Best known for the Eco-Drive light-powered quartz platform (1976); the Series 8 mechanical line (represented in this catalog) is the modern carve-out from the quartz-dominant product family.

Founded 1918 in Tokyo as the Shokosha Watch Research Institute; the "Citizen" name (chosen by then-Tokyo mayor Shimpei Goto to evoke a watch "for every citizen") was registered in 1924. Headquartered in Tokorozawa, Saitama, since 1930. Citizen is best known for the Eco-Drive light-powered quartz platform (1976). The watches in the catalog represented here are the Series 8 mechanical line, the brand’s 2021 carve-out from the quartz-dominant product family. The Series 8 870, 880, and 831 GMT use Citizen’s in-house 9051/0950/9054 calibers (50–60-hour reserves, ±10/-5 sec/day chronometric rating) and re-establish the brand’s 1970s mechanical-chronometer heritage (the original Crystal Seven, Challenge Timer, and Leopard lines).
