Fortis
Brand history
Founded in Grenchen (Solothurn canton) in 1912. Fortis became the official watch supplier to Soviet and Russian cosmonauts from 1994 onward, and remains a cult favorite for its instrument-grade field and diver watches.
Founded 1912 in Grenchen by Walter Vogt. Fortis established an official relationship with Russian Roscosmos cosmonauts, its Official Cosmonauts Chronograph (OCC) has been the official onboard watch of Russian space missions since the ISS partnership began. The Flieger Cockpit family (square-case pilot chronographs inspired by 1940s Bundeswehr-issue instruments) and the Marinemaster dive series are the catalog anchors. The brand was acquired by the German private equity firm HDL in 2018 and has been relaunching with updated calibers and positioning. The buyer note: Fortis occupies a speciality niche, cosmonauts, pilots, divers, with ETA-based calibers at CHF 1,000–2,500, and the space-mission provenance is genuine and well-documented. Less brand awareness outside the aviation and space community than the specification warrants.
