Brand history

Chanel's watch operations are centered in La Chaux-de-Fonds. In 2018, Chanel acquired a 20% stake in Kenissi, the movement manufacturer owned by Rolex and Tudor, co-developing Calibre 12.1 for the J12 relaunch. The COSC-certified movement legitimizes Chanel's horological credentials.

Founded 1910 in Paris by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel. Chanel entered fine watchmaking through the 1987 acquisition of the Le Locle movement manufacturer G&F Châtelain (Chanel named it Chanel Horlogerie). The Première (1987): rectangular case, octagonal crystal, inspired by the No. 5 bottle stopper and the Place Vendôme, was the first Chanel watch; the J12 (2000) in black ceramic was the move that put Chanel in the serious watch conversation, introducing an integrated ceramic case-and-bracelet at luxury prices in a sport silhouette before ceramic sport watches were common. Chanel's in-house caliber program runs through Chanel Horlogerie in Le Locle, which also supplies Calibre 1 movements to external buyers. The Boy.Friend and Mademoiselle Privé dress lines sit alongside the J12 sport family; the X-Ray (J12 with a transparent dial) is the complication-flex within the line. The buyer's honest assessment: Chanel watches are priced at luxury tiers and justified by design coherence and brand status rather than movement depth, the calibers are respectable but not what you buy Chanel for.
