A regulator separates hours, minutes, and seconds onto separate sub-dials, with no overlap, so the minute hand reads with no visual competition. The format originated on precision wall clocks used by 19th-century watchmakers as bench references. Modern wristwatch regulators include the Chronoswiss Régulateur (the brand that brought the format to wristwatches in 1987) and various Glashütte Original Senator references.
